The scheme consisted of a major new terminal building at King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah, increasing the facility's capacity to accommodate hub services. The $8 billion development was constructed by SBG and represents one of the largest aviation infrastructure projects in the Middle East.
Beyond the main terminal, the project incorporates an extensive supporting infrastructure: an airside hotel, over 14 kilometres of utility tunnels containing all services distribution, new energy centre buildings for cooling, power and water services, foul and grey water drainage pumping stations, fresh and grey water pumping stations and a fuel storage and management centre.
Osborn Associates were appointed as a named specialist sub-consultant to Faithful+Gould and Atkins, responsible for designing the fire protection systems throughout the full scope of the project. This covered concept design, detailed design and full hydraulic calculations for in excess of 60,000 sprinkler heads across the terminal, tunnels, energy centres and ancillary buildings.
The company produced over 300 CAD design drawings to the client's drawing and document specification, answered all contractors' technical queries throughout the design period and attended key client meetings to represent the fire protection design position.
The sheer scale of this project presented the greatest challenge. Designing fire protection for a development spanning a new terminal building, 14 kilometres of service tunnels, multiple energy centres, pumping stations and ancillary facilities required a systematic and disciplined approach to drawing production and document management.
Producing over 300 design drawings and their associated hydraulic calculations within compressed timescales demanded careful resource planning and a rigorous quality assurance process to ensure every drawing met the client's specification and the technical requirements of the scheme.
